Soleri Solarus
Cassie McGettigan
Fall 2013
I made “Soleri Solarus” while wintering in New York—the snow piling up outside—after a summer and fall living in Stockholm, punctuated by a road trip through Arizona to visit Paolo Soleri’s Arcosanti campus. When I look at the print, I see all of these influences. Foremost, I see the folkloric vine structure I had picked up on my visits to the Nordiska muséet but there’s also a slightly foreboding wintery vibe, with mesas and jagged key shapes I relate to Soleri’s bells and architecture. Part of the time when I was making the print, I was also watching Ken Burns’ Civil War series (again). So I see that too, but probably I’m the only one.
