Handcrafted Modern is one of our very favorite books to come along recently. Shot by local photographer Leslie Williamson, it is the culmination of a many-years long project to photograph the homes of fourteen influential mid-century architects and designers, including Wharton Esherick's handmade, cubby-having staircase, J.B. Blunk's ultraMarin-style bathroom, and Charles & Ray Eames's textile-filled conversation pit.
Far beyond the classic architectural photographs that have been taken previously, her photos offer an intimate and inspiring look at these private spaces, rich with the details of daily life that went on to inform the designers' work. These are images to match the extraordinary beauty of the spaces depicted.
We are delighted to announce that Leslie will be offering a slideshow and storytelling hour at the shop next Thursday, February 2nd at 7 pm. She will be sharing images from the book, as well as tales from the shoots and perhaps an autograph or two. Please join us!
