Past Collections

Gravel & Gold, the shop, opened its doors in 2008. Since 2012, we have produced clothing, accessories, and home goods with an emphasis on handmade print designs. Everything (almost) is made in San Francisco, California. We've also had the pleasure of collaborating with a host of inspiring producers and artists in the Bay Area and further afield. We are honored to do this work we love with people of such excellent-high standard! Please enjoy exploring our archive!

Spring 2014

Former fellow commune roommate, now Los Angeles-based artist Sara Bright designed the print "Palms Boulevard" this season. And our own Lisa Foti-Straus designed "Accord Comet," honoring the birth of her goddaughter Mila Violet Blankenship, 8 lbs. 7 oz. "Boobs," "Panda Face," "Soleri Solarus," and "Udon Dots" by Cassie McGettigan and a double-printed version of "NOIZ" by Rachel Kaye were also reissued in new colorways.

Katie Davis was photographed for this collection by Luiza Sá just days before their wedding.

Spring 2013

San Francisco-based painter Rachel Kaye volunteered during our residency at Gospel Flat Farm the previous year, and we hatched the idea of making a print with her at that time. It was a great pleasure to collaborate with Rachel on her print "NOIZ" for this collection. Also, Cass made her first multi-screen print "First Falls" and "Boobs" landed on shirts and pillowcases, where they have remained steadfast.

Shape-wise, we kept up our plan to make simple garments so that the print designs stood out, to improve what we had that was working, and to add what we wanted to wear. Our mama friends tell us that the Mekko Dress we introduced this season—smocked, with buttons—has been their go-to while pregnant and in the years that follow.

Mariko Reed photographed the collection at Auntie Augusta Talbot's house.

Spring 2012

We made our first collection ourselves. Well, Zoo-Ink printed the fabric and Holly Samuelsen sewed it while at the same time she taught us how to print and sew. We began with one print, "Panda Face," and two solid fabrics which we sewed into a tank top, a tank dress, the Gemini Dress, the Gemini Top, and two different bag designs. We learned a lot, quick!

For one week, we participated in a residency at Gospel Flat Farm in Bolinas, California, where we pinned, ironed, sewed, and ironed some more with the help a range of wonderful volunteers. We really pumped up the volume that week. Thanks Bronie & Mickey!

For our vibrational photo shoot, we loaded another group of sweet friends and their bikes onto the ferry for a classic foggy-sunny ramble around Angel Island. Em Gift did the bulk of the organizing that day and Cass took the pictures. O salad days!

Sarah Kersten

Big fans, all of us, of her decadent Fermenting Jars, we designed this stoneware coffee dripper with Sarah Kersten of Berkeley, CA in time for Christmas, 2014.
