Known for their quality and craftsmanship, Opinel has been making knives for over a century. The Opinel Company was founded in 1890 by Joseph Opinel in the Savoie region of France and the first Opinel knife was created that same year. In 1955 the Opinel family improved the safety of their knives, inventing the Virobloc® system. Because of the impact the Opinel Company has had on the knife industry in France over the last 100 years, in 1985 they were recognized by the Victoria and Albert Museum for being one the best designed items in the world alongside Porsche and Rolex.
