Steven Kilzer grew up with with perfect vision in a four-eyed family. This gave him an interest in eyeglasses and sunglasses at a young age. After years of working in video production for retail brands, he traded in his camera for a dusty shop and set out to design and handcraft sunglasses.
Fast forward a few years and now Steven has a studio in San Francisco, CA where all the glasses for Capital Eyewear are made. He and fellow craftspeople make sunglasses from materials like wood and acetate—a bio-plastic that can be adjusted for a custom fit. Steven is driven by the fun of making things, a desire for more responsible production than the current retail model and a fascination with eyewear. “Glasses are in a strange place somewhere between fashion, sculpture and a medical device. When I get tired of looking at them from one angle, there’s always another element to explore.”
