Salvati Stairs

Lisa Foti-Straus

Fall 2013

In an ongoing obsession with architectural books from the 70's I began a series of drawings from interiors displayed in tomes such as Young Designs in Color and Houses of the West. "Salvati Stairs" was made during this period, first in paint on paper, then with a Lamy fountain pen. I wanted to create a representational print that could still be turned in two directions and work either way, so the spiral staircase, with it's end and its beginning and its end all so similar became my focus. This all took place following a trip to Arcosanti and visit with Paolo Soleri which inspired Cass's "Soleri Solarus" as well, forming a duo of prints honoring architects.
