All of us Ladies of Gravel & Gold commute by bike from around the city to our studio in the Mission. And most days, dropping into that sunny valley, we are apt to admire fellow riders with their Alite Bike to the Beach Bags slung on their backs. It's such a simple, yet generous and versatile design. And, with its single panel construction in the front, we couldn't help but notice what a great surface it offers to show off a print.
So in the summer of 2014, we achieved a long-standing ambition to work with our neighbors, the wonderful team at Alite Designs. For this, what is we hope the first of many collaborations, we mingled their superb Bike to the Beach Bag with our print "Panda Face" for a super happy-making, urban picnic-OK backpack.
The canvas was printed locally at Zoo-Ink, the leather was cut, drilled, and stamped at, and Jean Saung sewed them up over at the Alite workshop. Our own Nastassia Clucas took the pictures at Sightglass that helped us spread the word.
