Raymond “Coca-Cola” Brown Sr. was no fool. As the owner of a Newport News bottling company, he was quick to claim the opportunity to produce a recently invented stationary bottle opener that was capable of perfoming its function without cracking or breaking the bottle. In 1925, Brown began manufacturing Thomas C. Hamilton’s design, the Starr X opener, in the basement of his botting plant. By 1936, Brown Manufacturing was known far and wide as the “largest single maker in the world of stationary bottle openers,” a claim the company still maintains.
