Now that we’ve got the naming bit all sorted, Aunties are delighted to spread our abounding love for the newest baby in our midst. He is Huxley O’Reilly Griffith of Arwen + Saul, nephew of Meara, born 6 pounds 12 ounces, one month ago tomorrow. A calm-eyed, wee wood sprite, he is. And here he is giving us all the bird in a photo taken by his sweet mama.

As I write this, I’m missing Mickey’s talk at the Community Center, and bummed about it. But this weekend, come on up for the Snock show and stay on for the food, some of it served from the Murch’s Eat Local kitchen-boat that’s been pulled in to town. Plus, the Bolinas Community Center serves our town well and is definitely worth supporting.

Nile is in New York City this week, hanging with her fellow cool cats. Always keep a whoo-whoo in your mind, girl. I miss, I miss.

7:00, Get Lost Travel Lloyd Kahn Slide Show

Lloyd Kahn is giving a slide show of the road trips that lead to Builders of the Pacific Coast, the most recent installment on owner-built homes from Shelter Publications. The first Shelter book, published in 1973, is the central green builders’ inspriation for “simple homes, natural materials, and human resourcefulness. It is about discovery, hard work, the joys of self-sufficiency, and freedom. It is about shelter, which is more that a roof overhead.” (That’s Lloyd in the good ol’ preface).

This most recent volume features extensive spreads on three master craftsmen—Lloyd House, Bruce Atkey, and Sun Ray Kelley—who have built fantastic structures from natural and reclaimed materials up the coast from Northern California to Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

Home Birth! Representing A Spanish Mattress

A beautiful woman gives birth at home, in sunshine, surrounded by the love of her partner and young son, with a flower in her hair. Her baby arrives to laughter, a daughter, is delivered straight to the breast. A midwife is there, mostly standing by. All is straight forward and regular.

In Spain, this is how they sell mattresses.

I hope this is as clear to you as it is to me. May all of our beds be so inviting, sunny and calm.

Stewart Brand

Stewart Brand founded the indispensable Whole Earth Catalog back in 1968, pranked around with the Merry Pranksters, formed one of the first online communities, The WELL, and exists now aboard a houseboat as the perfect Sausalitoan. Observe his profile in this weekend’s Green Brain issue of the NYT magazine:

Job description: I design stuff; I start stuff; I found stuff. On the passport I put “writer.”

Exercise routine: I hike Mount Tamalpais.

Evening routine: My wife, Ryan Phelan, and I tend to go to restaurants or throw together a dinner around 9 p.m. I’ll read a novel or a comic. We’ll take a bath together and be in bed by 11:30.

My copy of The Last Whole Earth Catalog, June 1971. This issue contains, among other treasures, “Divine Right’s Trip” by Gurney Norman, which won the National Book Award in 1972. But in fact a few Catalogs were issued thereafter.

Christie/Gainsbourg/Nelson

Seems the incomparable Mr. Drew Christie has recently provided gorgeous illustrated liner notes for a reissue of Serge Gainsbourg’s Histoire de Melody Nelson, news indeed, and then he went and made a signed and numbered limited edition poster for the project, all available at Light in the Attic, not so much in order to eclipse the lovely smuttiness of the original but to enable one to declare one’s admiration for the artist, and especially for Jane in that tiny white get-up, on one’s wall without seeming particularly smutty when mummy comes round.
